Senior Real Estate Counsel - Retail Leader
A highly recognized consumer business with a significant national footprint is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel, Real Estate to join its legal team. This attorney will serve as a key partner to the company's real estate, development, construction, and operations stakeholders, supporting a broad portfolio of locations across the U.S. The role offers the opportunity to lead sophisticated real estate transactions, advise on strategic growth initiatives, and work closely with business leaders on matters that directly impact the company's continued expansion.
This position is based at the company's headquarters and requires a regular in-office presence as part of a collaborative, business-facing legal team.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead negotiations and documentation for a wide range of commercial real estate transactions, including leasing, acquisitions, dispositions, development projects, and asset management matters.
- Partner with internal business teams on issues arising throughout the lifecycle of real estate assets, from site selection and development through ongoing operations.
- Advise stakeholders on landlord-tenant matters, property-related disputes, operational challenges, construction concerns, and contract interpretation.
- Review and assess title, survey, environmental, and due diligence materials to identify and mitigate potential risks.
- Support the company's real estate development strategy by collaborating with external advisors, consultants, and local counsel on property-related initiatives.
- Assist in managing disputes and litigation involving real estate assets and commercial property matters.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of legal templates, processes, and best practices across the real estate function.
- Provide legal support on zoning, permitting, land use, and related regulatory considerations impacting new and existing locations.
Qualifications
- J.D. and strong academic credentials.
- Approximately 8+ years of experience advising on complex commercial real estate transactions, gained in a law firm, in-house legal department, or a combination of both.
- Significant experience handling retail, multi-location, or high-volume real estate portfolios.
- Deep understanding of commercial leasing, acquisitions, development projects, and related transactional documentation.
- Experience negotiating directly with sophisticated landlords, developers, property owners, and external counterparties.
- Familiarity with matters such as easements, mixed-use developments, environmental considerations, distressed property issues, assignments, and other complex real estate structures.
- Ability to balance legal risk with practical business objectives in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
- Collaborative, solutions-oriented approach and willingness to work across a broad range of legal and business issues.
- Exposure to construction-related agreements or development projects is a plus.
