Liability Litigation Associate
A respected national law firm is seeking a Senior General Liability Attorney to join its growing Columbia, South Carolina office. This opportunity is ideal for an experienced litigator looking to take on meaningful responsibility, work directly with sophisticated clients, and handle a diverse portfolio of complex defense matters.
The successful candidate will have significant litigation experience and a strong background in areas such as general liability, premises liability, product liability, transportation, employment, and insurance defense. This role offers substantial client interaction, autonomy in managing cases, and the opportunity to collaborate with accomplished attorneys across multiple offices.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently manage a complex defense litigation caseload from inception through resolution, including trial, mediation, and settlement
- Develop and execute case strategy, including early case assessments, discovery planning, motion practice, and trial preparation
- Draft and argue substantive motions, pleadings, briefs, and legal memoranda in state and federal courts
- Take and defend depositions, manage all phases of written discovery, and work closely with expert witnesses
- Represent clients at hearings, mediations, arbitrations, and other dispute resolution proceedings
- Provide strategic legal counsel and regular case updates to clients, including in-house counsel and insurance representatives
- Collaborate with attorneys across offices on complex and multi-jurisdictional matters
- Mentor and supervise junior attorneys and legal support staff as needed
- Assist with trial strategy, witness preparation, exhibit management, and courtroom advocacy
- Build and maintain strong client relationships through responsive service and high-quality legal work
Qualifications
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
- Licensed and in good standing to practice law in South Carolina
- 8+ years of defense litigation experience
- Experience handling matters involving general liability, premises liability, product liability, transportation, employment, or insurance defense
- Strong analytical, writing, and oral advocacy skills
- Ability to independently manage a caseload and drive litigation strategy
- Strong client relationship and communication skills
- Proficiency with legal research and case management technology
- First-chair trial experience is a plus
