Intellectual Property Counsel
Job Summary
This role is eager to find an Intellectual Property Counsel to drive strategic development of this organization's global patent portfolio. You will lead IP analyses, support portfolio strategy, conduct freedom-to-operate (FTO) assessments, and execute complex IP initiatives under senior leadership. This individual can expect to translate technical insights into actionable guidance for engineering, product, and business teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and optimize patent portfolio aligned with technology roadmaps and business goals; identify high-value innovations and portfolio gaps.
- Conduct landscape analyses (whitespace, trends, benchmarking) and deliver data-driven insights to guide filing strategies and R&D decisions.
- Lead FTO analyses; advise on third-party patent risks and mitigation strategies supporting product development.
- Support M&A due diligence, licensing, partnerships, litigation, and confidentiality processes in collaboration with senior IP leadership.
- Advise and train engineering/product teams; communicate complex IP concepts clearly to drive informed decision-making.
Qualifications
- JD; active U.S. bar admission; USPTO registration
- 5+ years of experience in patent law (drafting, prosecution, portfolio strategy)
- Experience in IP analytics, risk assessment, and portfolio management
- Strong analytical, communication, and project management skills
- Strong preference for a background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field.
