Commercial Litigation Associate

Commercial Litigation Associate | Washington, D.C.

A well-established national law firm is looking to add an experienced Commercial Litigation Associate to its Washington, D.C. office.

The role would suit a commercial litigator who wants substantive responsibility and the ability to independently manage matters, but without the billable expectations typically associated with larger national firms.

One of the bigger differentiators is the firm's approach to billables and career development:

  • 1,800-hour annual target for Associates
  • Target decreases to 1,600 hours at Counsel level
  • The reduced Counsel target is intentional, giving more senior attorneys the capacity to develop client relationships and begin building their own book of business
  • A culture that places genuine emphasis on work-life balance alongside long-term career development

The Work

The practice handles complex commercial disputes in state and federal courts. The successful candidate will have experience across the litigation lifecycle and be comfortable taking meaningful ownership of matters, including:

  • Drafting and arguing substantive motions and briefs
  • Managing complex discovery and e-discovery
  • Taking and defending depositions
  • Participating in mediations and arbitrations
  • Preparing matters for trial
  • Managing an active caseload while working directly with clients and other members of the litigation team

Background

The firm is looking for someone with:

  • 4-7+ years of commercial litigation experience
  • D.C. admission or eligibility to waive in
  • Strong substantive writing and motion practice experience
  • Experience managing complex discovery
  • The ability to independently run significant portions of matters
  • Deposition, court, mediation and/or arbitration experience is preferred

This is particularly attractive for someone who enjoys sophisticated commercial litigation but wants a platform where the path toward Counsel and eventually developing business doesn't simply mean taking on an even larger billable burden.
