Our client is a well-established and growing participant in the global commodities and energy markets. The company engages in physical and financial trading activities across multiple commodity classes and is seeking an attorney to support its commercial trading operations. This position offers broad exposure to front-office trading, risk management, commercial transactions, and strategic business initiatives in a fast-paced environment.

Position Summary

The company is seeking an attorney with experience supporting commodities, energy, trading, or financial markets businesses. This individual will partner closely with traders, commercial stakeholders, risk teams, and senior leadership to provide practical legal advice on a wide range of trading and commercial matters.

This is an excellent opportunity for a junior to mid-level attorney looking to work directly with a business-oriented legal team and gain significant exposure to commodity trading transactions and day-to-day commercial operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, negotiate, and manage trading and commercial agreements related to commodity transactions.
  • Advise business teams on legal, regulatory, and commercial risks associated with trading activities.
  • Support the negotiation and documentation of industry-standard agreements, including: ISDA Agreements, NAESB Agreements, OTC Trading Agreements, Master Purchase and Sale Agreements and related documentation
  • Partner with traders, risk management, operations, finance, and compliance teams to facilitate commercial transactions.
  • Assist with dispute resolution, contract interpretation, and transactional issues as they arise.
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments impacting commodity and energy markets.
  • Provide general commercial and corporate legal support as needed across the organization.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Active bar admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Approximately 4+ years of relevant legal experience with commodities, energy trading, derivatives, financial products, or commercial trading transactions.
  • Experience negotiating and drafting agreements such as ISDAs, NAESBs, OTC agreements, master trading agreements, or comparable commercial contracts.
  • Strong contract drafting, negotiation, and issue-spotting skills.
  • Ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal advice in a fast-moving environment.
  • Experience supporting physical or financial commodity trading businesses.
  • Knowledge of commodity, derivatives, or energy market regulations.
  • Exposure to natural gas, power, crude oil, refined products, metals, agricultural commodities, or related markets.
