Patent Agent
Overview
A vertically integrated advanced materials and manufacturing company is seeking a Patent Agent to support the protection and growth of a rapidly expanding intellectual property portfolio. This role will focus on innovations across industrial processing, materials science, chemical engineering, and advanced manufacturing technologies.
The Patent Agent will work closely with engineers, scientists, and legal leadership to translate technical innovations into high‑quality patent filings that align with long‑term business and technology strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft, file, and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications related to:
- Materials extraction, processing, and separation technologies
- Chemical and metallurgical processes
- Manufacturing methods and process improvements
- Sustainability, recycling, and efficiency innovations
- Collaborate directly with R&D, engineering, and operations teams to identify patentable inventions and capture technical disclosures
- Respond to USPTO office actions and manage ongoing patent prosecution with minimal supervision
- Support portfolio strategy, including continuation practice and patent lifecycle management
- Assist with freedom‑to‑operate, prior art, and competitive landscape analyses
- Coordinate with external counsel on complex or international matters
- Contribute to IP diligence efforts related to partnerships, government‑funded projects, and commercial agreements
- Maintain patent records, deadlines, and internal documentation
Qualifications
Required
- Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
- Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline such as:
- Chemical Engineering
- Materials Science
- Chemistry
- Metallurgy
- Mechanical Engineering or closely related field
- Experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications in a technical or process‑driven industry
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly
Preferred
- Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a relevant technical field
- Experience supporting industrial, energy, materials, or manufacturing technologies
- In‑house or corporate patent experience
- Familiarity with international patent prosecution
