Legal Counsel - Renewable Energy & Project Development
A growing renewable energy company is seeking to expand its legal team with the addition of a Legal Counsel. This role will provide legal guidance across finance, real estate, and project development matters, supporting various departments and initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal analysis and advice on real estate, permitting, interconnection, regulatory, and project development matters.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure legal compliance and manage risk across development, finance, construction, market operations, and asset management.
- Draft and negotiate real estate documents including leases, easements, purchase agreements, and other related contracts.
- Prepare and negotiate interconnection agreements, permits, and regulatory documents.
- Support title-related activities such as reviewing title documents, resolving issues, and negotiating title insurance.
- Assess and communicate legal risks throughout project development and implement mitigation strategies.
- Assist with financing activities including acquisitions, tax credit monetization, and investment structuring.
- Provide legal guidance on tax credit matters related to energy storage projects.
- Manage outside counsel and oversee legal billing.
- Handle general contract negotiations and other legal matters as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong problem-solving skills and practical legal judgment.
- Experience managing legal support staff and coordinating with external stakeholders.
- Familiarity with curative title work and working with utilities, banks, and third parties.
- Expertise in title and survey processes.
- Experience in project siting and working within project teams.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and assess business risks and opportunities.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Comfortable working in a small, dynamic team environment.
Education & Experience Requirements
- JD from an accredited law school and active membership in at least one state bar.
- Minimum 5 years of legal experience in real estate and project development.
- At least 2 years of in-house legal experience preferred.
- Background in large-scale renewable energy or energy storage projects is a plus.
- Ability to make informed decisions with limited information and adapt to evolving business needs.
- Strong initiative and ownership mindset.
