Senior Level Payments Counsel @ Global Fintech Startup
Our client is a venture-backed fintech company that has built a commerce platform on a global scale.
The company recently completed a major strategic funding round and is accelerating its push into stablecoin-powered payments and cross-border financial infrastructure products.
The Role: As a Senior level attorney, you will report to the General Counsel and serve as the go-to legal advisor across the company's payments stack - from product development and regulatory strategy to financial partner relationships and international expansion.
The work spans U.S. and global payments regulation, with increasing exposure to stablecoin and digital asset regulatory frameworks. You'll sit at the intersection of legal, product, and engineering in a fast-moving environment where regulatory complexity is growing in step with the business.
The Responsibilities:
- Provide regulatory and product counsel to engineering and product teams as they design and launch new payment features and financial products
- Manage legal aspects of relationships with payment processors, acquiring banks, card networks, and financial infrastructure partners
- Collaborate with compliance and risk functions to build scalable frameworks, policies, and controls
- Own consumer- and seller-facing payment terms, refund policies, and dispute resolution frameworks
- Evaluate licensing obligations and regulatory requirements for new market entry
- Monitor regulatory developments across payments, fintech, digital commerce, and digital assets, and translate them into practical business guidance
- Contribute to building a legal function designed to scale with a high-growth business
Qualifications:
- J.D. and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- 4-7+ years of experience advising on payments, fintech, or financial services regulation in-house or at a top law firm
- Deep knowledge of payments infrastructure and regulation: card network rules, money transmission, merchant acquiring, consumer protection
- Working familiarity with AML/BSA, international payments frameworks (PSD2, e-money regulation), and consumer finance law
- Track record of partnering effectively with product, engineering, and business teams in a fast-paced environment
