Lead Employment Counsel - National Consumer & Retail Organization
Larson Maddox is partnering with a leading national consumer organization to add a senior employment attorney to its legal leadership team. With a significant multi-state presence and large, diverse workforce, this is an opportunity to take on a highly visible role with broad ownership of the employment law function and direct exposure to senior legal, HR, and business leadership.
This individual will serve as the organization's senior employment law specialist and manage two attorneys. The role is based in the greater Boston area with a hybrid schedule of three days in the office.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the lead legal advisor across employment matters, including employee relations, hiring and terminations, wage and hour, leaves and accommodations, compensation, and other workplace issues
- Partner closely with HR, senior executives, and business leaders to provide practical counsel, navigate sensitive personnel matters, and proactively mitigate employment risk
- Manage employment litigation and claims, including agency matters, demand letters, settlement negotiations, and outside counsel
- Lead workplace investigations and advise on matters involving discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and other employee concerns
- Oversee employment policies, compliance initiatives, risk assessments, and training across a complex, multi-state workforce
- Provide employment support for strategic business initiatives and transactions, while contributing to broader legal and compliance matters as needed
- Manage and develop two attorneys and serve as a senior resource across the broader legal team
Qualifications
- J.D. and active bar membership, with 12+ years of substantive employment law experience, open to in-house or law firm experience
- Deep employment counseling experience across a broad range of workplace matters
- Experience supporting a large, multi-state workforce, ideally with significant hourly/non-exempt populations
- Strong employment litigation experience and/or significant responsibility managing outside counsel and claims
- Demonstrated ability to advise senior executives and operate effectively within a large, complex organization
- Prior experience managing and developing attorneys
- Strong judgment and communication skills, with an interest in leveraging technology and AI to improve legal processes
