Chief Counsel - Marketing & Sales
Our client, a global organization in the commodities industry, is looking to hire on a Chief Counsel - Sales & Marketing, Trading & Shipping to join their Chicago office. This is a pivotal role in the broader Commercial function and will have global-reach and responsibilities. This is a role with direct reports.
Responsibilities
- Lead and Inspire: Provide exceptional leadership to a diverse international team of lawyers and global trade professionals.
- Strategic Development: Formulate and implement global sales and marketing strategies to support organizational goals.
- Complex Negotiations: Guide and structure intricate multi-stakeholder negotiations for commodity sales in global markets.
- Expert Legal Advice: Offer sound counsel on commodity-related disputes, including force majeure, sanctions, trade finance, and geopolitical risks.
- Risk Mitigation: Identify and mitigate risks related to sanctions and export controls.
- Resource Management: Optimize and manage the time and cost of internal and external legal resources efficiently.
- Dispute Management: Oversee external counsel in resolving disputes related to commodities, shipping, and other commercial matters.
- Proactive Guidance: Provide proactive advice to cross-functional teams on structuring new transactions or partnerships, fostering innovative solutions.
- Support Initiatives: Collaborate on digitalization, decarbonization, and integrated trading initiatives, focusing on the legal and commercial aspects to unlock value in commodity trading.
Qualifications
- 15+ years of experience practicing, ideally with a strong focus on commodities trading and sales.
- Barred in at least one U.S. state
- Proven leadership skill and ability to manage remote international teams.
- Excellent international stakeholder management skills with a record in improving business outcomes.
- Experience with an international manufacturer preferred.
- Knowledge of sanctions programs imposed by various countries, including the US, EU, UK, and UN preferred.
