Associate Attorney - Federal Energy Regulatory Practice

A leading law firm is seeking an associate attorney with 2-4 years of experience to join its Chambers-ranked Federal Energy Regulatory practice. This team operates within a broader Regulatory & Compliance department that handles a wide range of regulatory matters including approvals, permitting, enforcement defense, rulemaking, and project development at all levels of government.
The Federal Energy Regulatory team focuses on matters before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), advising clients in the electricity and natural gas sectors. Clients include investor-owned utilities, independent transmission and generation developers, and energy traders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Represent clients in FERC proceedings and related regulatory matters.
- Advise on market-based and cost-of-service rate regulation, compliance, and electric market design.
- Support transactions involving the financing, development, acquisition, and disposition of energy/utility assets.
- Prepare and review filings, conduct due diligence, and provide strategic regulatory counsel.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
- 2-4 years of experience in federal electric regulation, ideally including:
- FPA Section 203 filings and compliance
- Market-based rates
- Cost-of-service ratemaking
- Organized energy markets
- Strong academic credentials and writing skills
- Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently within a team
- DC Bar membership or eligibility to waive in
- Experience with FERC's e-filing, e-Tariff systems, and MBR database is a plus
