Managing Counsel

A leading company operating critical industrial and energy infrastructure is seeking an experienced attorney to join its legal team in a senior leadership-facing role. This position will serve as a key legal advisor to operational leadership, partnering closely with business stakeholders on complex regulatory, environmental, litigation, labor, and commercial matters.

Key Responsibilities

• Advise business leaders on environmental, health & safety (EHS/HSE) regulatory compliance matters at the federal, state, and local levels.
• Counsel internal stakeholders on environmental enforcement, permitting, compliance, and risk management issues.
• Support labor and employment matters, including issues involving represented workforces.
• Provide guidance on procurement, supply chain, and commercial matters impacting site operations.
• Manage and oversee complex litigation and regulatory investigations.
• Coordinate with and oversee outside counsel while managing budgets and legal spend.
• Develop and deliver compliance training for business teams.
• Support internal audits, compliance initiatives, and regulatory reviews.
• Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and advise leadership on potential impacts.
• Partner cross-functionally with operations, environmental, HR, procurement, and executive leadership teams.

Desired Background

• J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership (California admission or ability to register as in-house counsel preferred).
• 10+ years of legal experience, ideally within energy, industrial manufacturing, chemicals, heavy industry, infrastructure, or other highly regulated sectors.
• Strong experience handling environmental regulatory compliance, enforcement actions, or related litigation.
• Familiarity with labor and employment matters, including unionized work environments, is highly valued.
• Experience managing complex litigation and outside counsel.
• Ability to balance legal risk with practical business objectives.
• Strong communication, judgment, and stakeholder management skills.
