Director of Business Development
The firm is seeking a strategic, growth‑minded Director of Business Development to lead firmwide revenue generation, client development, and brand visibility across all U.S. offices. This leader will translate the firm's enterprise strategy into actionable business development initiatives that drive measurable results across practice areas, industry teams, and key client programs.
The ideal candidate is an experienced professional‑services BD leader who excels at advising senior stakeholders, coaching attorneys, developing high‑impact client strategies, and fostering cross‑practice collaboration in a complex law‑firm environment.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Planning & Firm Alignment
- Implement firmwide strategic priorities through targeted BD initiatives with clear objectives and measurable outcomes.
Growth Strategy & Opportunity Development
- Identify and pursue revenue opportunities across practices, industries, and key clients; recommend strategies to deepen relationships and expand market share.
Strategic Advisor to Leadership
- Provide market insight, competitive positioning guidance, and client‑focused strategic recommendations to firm, practice, and industry leaders.
Client, Industry & Account Planning
- Lead the development and execution of integrated client and industry team plans; facilitate planning sessions, debriefs, and relationship reviews to uncover new opportunities.
Proposals, Pitches & RFP Management
- Oversee the creation of strategic, client-centric proposals and pitches; drive consistency, elevate quality, and improve win rates.
Attorney Coaching & Practice Development
- Guide individual attorneys and practice groups by developing tailored BD plans and coaching on sales techniques, relationship management, and opportunity identification.
Team Leadership & Talent Development
- Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing Business Development team; promote a collaborative, solutions-oriented culture aligned with firm priorities.
Marketing & Brand Collaboration
- Partner with marketing to enhance visibility, thought leadership, and brand positioning in support of business development goals.
Data, Technology & Performance Measurement
- Leverage CRM and analytics tools to strengthen pipeline tracking, client engagement, and performance reporting.
Market Research & Change Leadership
- Oversee competitive intelligence and market analysis; drive adoption of new tools, processes, and best practices across the BD function.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree (Master's or JD) preferred
- 10+ years of business development experience, ideally within a mid‑ to large‑law‑firm environment
- Proven success partnering with senior leadership and managing client teams and complex proposals
- Exceptional communication, relationship‑building, and strategic planning skills
- Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and inspire high‑performing teams
- Strong judgment, discretion, and ability to manage change in a professional‑services environment
- Commitment to collaboration, innovation, and advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging

- Supervisory Responsibilities: Yes
- Work Model: Hybrid; minimum of four days onsite weekly in St. Louis, Kansas City, or Chicago
- Travel: Semi‑frequent domestic travel to firm offices
