Associate General Counsel

Job Overview

A fast-growing specialty lending and financial services organization is seeking an experienced Associate General Counsel to join its fully remote in-house legal leadership team. This position offers the opportunity to serve as a strategic advisor to executive leadership while providing legal guidance across lending operations, regulatory compliance, capital markets activities, corporate governance, commercial transactions, technology initiatives, and portfolio servicing.

This is a highly visible role for a business-minded attorney who enjoys working cross-functionally, solving complex legal and operational challenges, and helping drive organizational growth in a dynamic environment. The successful candidate will partner closely with senior leaders across lending, finance, technology, operations, risk, vendor management, and human resources while helping shape legal strategy across the enterprise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal counsel on federal and state laws impacting mortgage lending, consumer finance, employment, privacy, anti-money laundering, fair lending, credit reporting, and related regulatory frameworks.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments, assess business impact, and advise leadership on emerging legal risks and compliance obligations.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and advise on a wide range of commercial agreements, including technology, vendor, service, and confidentiality agreements.
  • Support lending operations by advising on underwriting matters, escalated loan issues, policy updates, and risk management initiatives.
  • Provide legal support for technology projects, including third-party platforms, automation initiatives, artificial intelligence solutions, and proprietary systems.
  • Lead legal strategy relating to servicing, foreclosure, bankruptcy, litigation, and asset recovery matters while managing outside counsel and third-party partners.
  • Oversee legal and operational matters involving real estate owned (REO) assets, including property disposition and servicing transitions.
  • Partner with capital markets and finance teams on securitizations, loan sale transactions, credit facilities, and corporate financing arrangements.
  • Support corporate governance activities, including board and committee materials, resolutions, entity management, and governance best practices.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to strengthen compliance programs, internal controls, and risk management processes across the organization.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 7+ years of legal experience within financial services, lending, banking, consumer finance, fintech, or related industries.
  • Prior in-house counsel experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance legal risk with business objectives and operate as a practical, solutions-oriented advisor.
  • Strong contract negotiation, regulatory analysis, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities with executives and cross-functional business teams
