About the Opportunity
A leading global retail and consumer-focused organization is seeking a Director, Real Estate Counsel to join its in-house legal team. This role will be based in New York City and will support the company's real estate and store development initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the drafting, review, and negotiation of a broad range of commercial real estate transactions, including retail leases, occupancy agreements, construction-related contracts, and other property-related arrangements supporting business growth and operations.
- Manage all aspects of lease administration and portfolio documentation, including amendments, estoppels, SNDAs, tenant improvement agreements, licenses, critical date tracking, lease abstracts, and compliance with contractual obligations.
- Partner with real estate, development, construction, and business teams to provide practical legal guidance on lease interpretation, site selection, project development, and risk management throughout the lifecycle of real estate projects.
- Oversee due diligence efforts, maintain portfolio reporting and tracking systems, and support strategic decision-making related to real estate assets and expansion initiatives.
- Resolve complex real estate disputes and negotiations involving landlords, tenants, contractors, vendors, and other third parties while balancing legal risk with business objectives.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school with strong academic credentials.
- Active membership in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar, preferably New York.
- Must have retail experience!
- Minimum of 3-5 years of legal experience, with a strong focus on commercial and/or retail leasing and related real estate transactions.
Preferred Experience
- Experience supporting multi-state retail, commercial, or consumer-facing real estate portfolios.
- Exposure to store development, construction, and facilities-related legal matters.
- Ability to balance legal risk with operational and business considerations while driving transactions to completion.
