Role Overview
Commercial & Transactional Support
- Provide legal guidance to business teams on a high volume of commercial matters, including merchandise procurement, licensing arrangements, social media and influencer marketing, warehouse and fulfillment operations, and SaaS, AI, and other technology-related agreements.
- Advise the Operations team on legal issues involving supply chain operations, logistics, quality assurance, and sourcing.
- Lead negotiations for the legal terms of some of the company's most strategic and high-impact transactions across the organization.
- Support the development and implementation of contract management and risk mitigation policies, and deliver training to relevant stakeholders.
Consumer & Marketing Compliance
- Partner with Marketing and Creative teams to review advertising and promotional materials for compliance with FTC regulations, state consumer protection laws, and platform-specific rules.
- Review and advise on consumer-facing programs such as sweepstakes, contests, loyalty initiatives, subscription offerings, and related promotions.
- Track and analyze developments in consumer protection law and proactively advise the business on new and emerging compliance requirements, including those related to the use of AI in marketing and customer engagement.
Privacy & Data Security
- Act as a core legal advisor on privacy and data security topics, including compliance with CCPA/CPRA and other applicable U.S. and international privacy laws.
- Collaborate with Product and Technology teams to review data practices, vendor data processing agreements, and privacy-related product features, including AI-powered personalization tools.
- Assist in the creation and ongoing management of privacy notices, internal data governance programs, and incident response procedures.
Product & Technology Counseling
- Work closely with Product and Technology teams to provide legal advice on new features, platform enhancements, and consumer-facing launches from ideation through deployment.
- Identify and assess legal risks tied to new product initiatives, including issues related to intellectual property, consumer protection, privacy, and regulatory compliance.
- Contribute to the development of scalable and efficient legal review processes that support rapid product development, including the thoughtful use of AI tools to improve legal team efficiency.
- Stay informed on the evolving legal and regulatory framework surrounding artificial intelligence, including model liability, IP ownership of AI-generated content, and emerging federal and state legislation.
Dispute Resolution & Litigation Oversight
- Manage outside counsel handling litigation matters, regulatory inquiries, and potential disputes.
- Assess legal risk and exposure and develop practical strategies to resolve disputes in a cost-effective and business-focused manner.
- Lead or support internal investigations and coordinate cross-functional fact-gathering efforts.
Support of the General Counsel
- Serve as a close advisor and partner to the General Counsel, helping to prioritize and manage legal work across the organization.
- Provide strategic legal advice to business teams on new initiatives, partnerships, and growth opportunities.
- Tackle a wide range of legal matters in a fast-moving, entrepreneurial environment, while contributing to a collaborative and engaging team culture.
Qualifications
What You'll Bring
- J.D. from a top-tier law school (preferred).
- Active membership in good standing with the California State Bar, or eligibility to register as in-house counsel.
- 5-7 years of relevant legal experience, either in-house or at a leading law firm, with demonstrated experience across commercial transactions, compliance, and/or litigation.
- Strong experience drafting, negotiating, and advising on commercial agreements; experience with manufacturing, supply, and purchase agreements with domestic and international vendors is a plus.
- Solid working knowledge of consumer protection, advertising compliance, and/or privacy law.
- Experience managing outside counsel and overseeing litigation and dispute resolution matters.
- A genuine interest in artificial intelligence, including staying current on AI-related legal and policy developments and actively using AI tools to enhance personal productivity.
- Practical, thoughtful, and collaborative, with strong interpersonal skills.
- Able to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving business environment.
- Adaptable to changing priorities, with sound judgment about when flexibility is appropriate and when it is not.
