Position Overview
The Litigation Counsel will serve as a senior litigation expert, driving trial strategy and execution across a diverse portfolio of complex, high-exposure cases. This role combines hands-on trial work with leadership responsibilities, including mentoring attorneys, improving litigation practices, and enhancing overall trial readiness within the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead trial preparation across the department, developing and executing comprehensive strategies for complex, high-risk cases.
- Serve as the department's subject matter expert in trial practice, providing guidance from early case assessment through verdict.
- Act as lead trial counsel, handling all aspects of trial including openings, closings, witness examinations, and evidentiary presentations.
- Mentor and supervise attorneys, providing coaching on trial advocacy, depositions, motion practice, discovery strategy, and case evaluation.
- Design and deliver training programs to enhance litigation and trial capabilities across the team.
- Partner with senior leadership to identify skill gaps and implement targeted development plans.
- Conduct detailed case assessments and prepare fully trial-ready files, including witness preparation and exhibit strategy.
- Oversee fact development through interviews, document review, site inspections, and collaboration with investigators and paralegals.
- Draft and argue dispositive motions, as well as appellate briefs and oral arguments in state and federal courts.
- Manage a docket of high-complexity matters, driving strategy toward trial, resolution, or dismissal.
- Represent the organization in court appearances, hearings, and conferences.
- Support litigation operations oversight, focusing on quality, efficiency, and cost management.
- Establish best practices, playbooks, and standardized procedures for consistent trial readiness.
- Provide legal advice to business stakeholders as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
Experience
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant litigation experience
- Extensive trial experience, including first-chair responsibilities
- Experience practicing across all 5 NY boroughs
Licenses & Certifications
- Admission to the New York State Bar (required)
- Valid driver's license
Additional Requirements
- Willingness to travel throughout the service territory as required
