Environmental Attorney

Our client is seeking a knowledgeable and pragmatic Environmental Attorney to join their in-house legal team at a leading energy infrastructure company. This role will provide strategic legal counsel on environmental matters affecting the development, construction, and operation of energy assets across multiple jurisdictions. The ideal candidate will bring a strong command of environmental law, regulatory compliance, and permitting processes, particularly in the context of large-scale infrastructure and linear projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise on federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations, including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, CERCLA, NEPA, and Endangered Species Act.
  • Support permitting and compliance efforts related to the construction and operation of energy infrastructure, including pipelines, compressor stations, terminals, and related facilities.
  • Provide legal guidance on environmental due diligence for asset development, acquisitions, and divestitures.
  • Collaborate with internal teams including regulatory, operations, engineering, and EH&S to proactively manage environmental risk and ensure compliance.
  • Represent the company in interactions with regulatory agencies and support responses to inspections, notices of violation, and enforcement actions.
  • Monitor evolving environmental regulations and assess their potential impact on business operations and strategy.
  • Manage outside counsel on environmental litigation, permitting, and enforcement matters.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of internal environmental policies and training programs.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Active bar membership in good standing.
  • 5+ years of relevant legal experience, preferably with a combination of law firm and in-house or agency experience.
  • Deep understanding of environmental laws and regulatory frameworks applicable to energy infrastructure and industrial operations.
  • Experience supporting permitting and compliance for large-scale or linear infrastructure projects.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
