Sr. Counsel - Risk Management & Litigation

A real estate investment management firm is seeking an Associate General Counsel to join the legal team. This role will focus on risk management, litigation management and operational support.

Responsibilities:

Risk Management

  • Design and manage the organization's risk management strategy to ensure full coverage and regulatory compliance.
  • Coordinate the acquisition and renewal of insurance policies, including property, liability, and business coverage.
  • Oversee insurance claims, collaborating with brokers, insurers, and internal departments to ensure efficient resolution.
  • Provide guidance on minimizing risk in areas such as property management, vendor relationships, and construction projects.

Operational Support

  • Prepare, evaluate, and negotiate agreements with vendors, contractors, and service providers, ensuring they align with company standards and risk policies.
  • Create and update standard contract templates and operational agreement guidelines.
  • Offer legal assistance to property management and construction teams, helping resolve operational challenges and ensuring legal compliance.

Litigation Oversight

  • Manage the company's legal case portfolio, working with external legal counsel and internal teams to handle disputes effectively.
  • Identify potential legal risks and develop strategies to reduce exposure.
  • Keep detailed records of legal matters and provide regular updates to senior leadership

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in Illinois or eligible for in-house counsel registration.
  • Minimum of 5 years of legal experience, with a focus on risk management, litigation, insurance, and commercial contracts
  • Experience in a real estate investment or property management firm is preferred
