Senior Counsel
We are currently partnered with a fast-growing e-commerce platform. This client just raised a successful Series B and is backed by a major private equity firm. Their product allows creators to connect with influential brands, build relationships, and own their own digital shops.
They are looking for their first legal hire to establish the foundations of the legal department and spearhead their commercial contracts. This person will be a true generalist and handle various matters and partner with cross-functional teams.
*This role is remote, but prefer a candidate based in New York
Responsibilities
- Head of contract strategy across the business-drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide variety of commercial agreements (SaaS, influencer/brand deals, tech and vendor contracts, etc.)
- Serve as a partner to internal teams, balancing legal risk with business impact
- Provide pragmatic, actionable legal advice across departments-product, ops, HR, marketing, partnerships, and beyond
- Support corporate transactions including M&A, investments, and strategic partnerships
- Advise on new business initiatives, from launch to scale
- Knowledgable on data privacy and consumer protection laws (GDPR, CCPA, FTC, etc.)
- Draft and implement clear, scalable policies to manage risk and keep us ahead of regulatory shifts
- Advise on trademark, copyright, licensing, and IP strategy to protect our brand and content
- Provide guidance on employment law matters including hiring, terminations, policies, and contractor classifications (especially NY/CA law)
- Proactively manage potential disputes and litigation, including working with external counsel
Requirements
- J.D. from a top accredited law school and active bar membership (NY preferred)
- 6+ years of legal experience, ideally with a mix of law firm and in-house roles at high-growth companies
- Strong command of commercial contracts, privacy law, IP, and corporate governance
- Experience in e-commerce, SaaS, tech, or creator economy environments
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Experience with creating legal foundations and processes
- Familiarity with AI-related legal developments
- Deep expertise in employment law (especially California and New York)
- Comfort navigating areas of social media, influencer marketing, and digital advertising
