Senior Legal Counsel (m/w/d)

Senior Legal Counsel - Energy Sector - Luxembourg

Our client, an established organisation operating within the European energy sector is looking to appoint a Senior Legal Counsel to its Luxembourg-based legal function.

The successful candidate will join an experienced and collaborative team, advising on a broad range of commercial, regulatory and operational legal matters. The position offers significant interaction with business teams, senior stakeholders, external advisers and relevant public-sector bodies.

This is a broad, hands-on role for a lawyer who enjoys taking ownership of varied legal matters, working closely with operational colleagues and translating complex legal questions into clear and practical business advice.

Direct energy-law experience would be highly relevant but is not essential. Candidates with strong experience in commercial contracts, infrastructure, regulated industries, administrative law, public law or civil law will also be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide practical and proactive legal advice to operational and cross-functional teams.
  • Conduct detailed legal research and advise on Luxembourg and European legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of commercial contracts and other legal documents.
  • Develop contract templates, legal memoranda, internal guidance and practical recommendations.
  • Support legal and regulatory matters connected to the energy sector and the wider energy transition.
  • Monitor changing legislation and advise the business on the practical implications of legal and regulatory developments.
  • Collaborate with external stakeholders, public-sector bodies and specialist legal advisers.
  • Identify legal solutions that support the organisation's commercial and operational objectives while effectively controlling legal risk.
  • Manage disputes and litigation in collaboration with external counsel.
  • Build strong relationships with operational teams and other internal stakeholders.
  • Deliver internal legal training and share knowledge across the organisation.
  • Contribute to the continued development of the legal function's processes, templates and internal expertise.

Candidate Requirements

  • A university law degree obtained within Europe, together with a strong understanding of European legal principles.
  • At least four years of relevant legal experience, depending on the strength and relevance of the candidate's background.
  • Experience gained in-house, within private practice or through a combination of both.
  • Strong German and English language skills.
  • French would be highly beneficial due to the Luxembourg legal environment and the nature of the relevant legislation and legal documentation.
  • Candidates with an existing foundation in German or French and a clear willingness to improve may also be considered.
  • Experience within energy, renewables, utilities, infrastructure or another regulated sector would be particularly relevant.
  • Candidates with senior-level commercial or contract-law experience will also be considered without direct energy-sector experience.
  • Experience in regulatory law, administrative law, public law, civil law or litigation would be advantageous.
  • Strong contract drafting, negotiation, legal research and analytical skills.
  • Ability to translate complex legal concepts into practical and commercially focused advice.
  • Confidence working directly with operational teams, senior stakeholders, public-sector bodies and external legal advisers.
