Senior Counsel - Environmental
Senior Counsel Position Summary:
The Senior Counsel, Environmental will serve as the primary legal advisor on environmental matters across the company's U.S. midstream operations. This role will focus on regulatory compliance, permitting, enforcement, and environmental risk management, with an emphasis on EPA regulations and their application to pipeline, storage, and related infrastructure assets.
Senior Counsel Key Responsibilities:
Provide legal advice on a wide range of environmental laws and regulations, including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, CERCLA, and SPCC requirements, as applied to midstream infrastructure.
Support compliance and permitting efforts related to air emissions, wastewater discharges, waste handling, remediation, and spill prevention.
Advise on regulatory strategy and engagement with federal and state environmental and safety agencies across multiple jurisdictions.
Partner with internal teams to proactively identify and manage environmental risks and regulatory obligations.
Collaborate closely with EHS professionals to ensure legal alignment on compliance programs and incident response.
Manage inspections, notices of violation, and enforcement actions, including strategy development and response.
Monitor and interpret environmental regulatory developments; advise on business impacts and risk mitigation strategies.
Support environmental diligence and documentation in connection with acquisitions, divestitures, and new infrastructure development.
Coordinate with outside counsel and technical consultants on complex environmental matters, including remediation and litigation.
Provide internal training and guidance on environmental compliance and evolving regulatory requirements.
Senior Counsel Qualifications:
J.D. from an accredited law school and licensed to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
5+ years of legal experience with a strong focus on environmental law and regulatory compliance in the energy or infrastructure sectors.
Deep familiarity with environmental regulations.
Experience interacting with federal and state regulatory agencies on environmental and safety matters.
Proven ability to deliver practical, business-oriented legal advice on complex regulatory topics.
Excellent communication, issue-spotting, and risk-assessment skills.
In-house legal experience or legal support for energy infrastructure clients is preferred.
