Deputy General Counsel

Overview

A leading global macro hedge fund is seeking an exceptional Deputy General Counsel to take ownership of all legal matters across its hedge fund business. This is a senior, high‑impact role suited to a lawyer who enjoys operating close to the investment floor, partnering directly with the COO, GC, and portfolio leadership.

The Opportunity

You'll be the key legal voice supporting the hedge fund business, balancing strategic advisory work with hands‑on oversight of core trading documentation, regulatory questions, and fund‑related matters. This is a chance to operate with autonomy, gain visibility across the entire investment lifecycle, and help drive the continued global growth of a sophisticated macro platform.

Responsibilities

  • End‑to‑end legal oversight of the hedge fund business, serving as the subject‑matter expert across trading, markets, and fund operations.
  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating trading documentation (ISDAs/CSAs, GMRAs, GMSLAs, PB agreements, clearing arrangements).
  • Advising on UK/EU regulatory matters (FCA, AIFMD, MiFID II), investment structures, trading strategies, and cross‑border implications.
  • Working closely with portfolio managers, risk, operations, and compliance on product launches, liquidity management, and new‑market entry.
  • Managing legal risk across counterparties, service providers, and fund vehicles.
  • Acting as deputy to the General Counsel, with genuine succession potential.

Qualifications

  • 10 - 15 PQE, ideally trained at a top law firm followed by in‑house experience at a hedge fund or alternative investment manager.
  • Strong grounding in derivatives, trading documentation, and buy‑side regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience advising on fund structures, operational legal issues, and front‑office interaction.
  • Ability to operate autonomously, make judgment calls, and influence senior investment stakeholders.
  • A hands‑on, solutions‑driven mindset suited to a lean, sophisticated investment environment.
