A leading global technology company is seeking an experienced Senior Export Counsel to join its growing Legal team. This highly visible role will serve as a strategic advisor on complex export controls, national security, sanctions, and cross-border technology issues impacting innovative products, research, engineering, and global business operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as a trusted advisor on U.S. export controls, national security regulations, and global trade compliance matters.
• Will build out export compliance function and establish export procedures.
• Provide legal guidance on hardware, software, technology transfers, cloud environments, data systems, AI technologies, and emerging products.
• Advise engineering, research and development, and product teams on export classification, licensing requirements, and technology transfer considerations.
• Lead export classification analyses for products, components, software, and technology
• Develop practical legal strategies for navigating complex geopolitical, regulatory, and compliance challenges.
• Draft and negotiate export compliance provisions in commercial agreements, strategic partnerships, and technology transactions.
• Support mergers, acquisitions, investments, and other strategic transactions through international trade-related due diligence.
• Interface with government agencies regarding licensing matters, enforcement inquiries, and compliance activities.
• Lead internal investigations, regulatory reviews, and voluntary disclosure initiatives when necessary.
• Design, strengthen, and manage export compliance programs, policies, procedures, internal controls, and training initiatives.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify, assess, and mitigate global trade compliance risks.
• Monitor regulatory developments and evaluate the impact of changes to export control laws, sanctions programs, and national security regulations.
• Support automation and technology-driven compliance solutions to improve operational efficiency and risk management.
• Conduct enterprise-wide risk assessments and compliance gap analyses.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Active license to practice law in a U.S. or other common law jurisdiction.
• Significant law firm and/or in-house experience focused on export controls and trade compliance.
• Deep expertise with:
  • U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and ITAR
  • Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) regulations and licensing
  • Commerce Control List (CCL) classifications
  • Cross-border technology transfers
  • National security and export control frameworks
• Experience developing and managing global export compliance programs.
• Strong understanding of sanctions regimes and their interaction with export control requirements.
• Experience conducting export classifications, licensing analyses, internal investigations, and regulatory reviews.
• Exceptional communication, project management, and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Ability to simplify complex legal issues and provide practical, business-oriented advice.
• Strong judgment, attention to detail, and ability to operate in a rapidly changing regulatory environment.

Preferred Experience

• Experience supporting starup companies or in small company environment.
• Knowledge of aerospace industry and aircraft.
• Experience supporting global engineering and product development organizations.
• Familiarity with compliance automation, regulatory technology tools, and scalable compliance programs.
• Ability to manage multiple high-priority matters under tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
