Food Policy Sr. Legal Counsel
Position Overview
A Fortune 500 consumer packaged goods company is looking to bring in a Senior Counsel in Food Law and Policy to provide legal guidance and strategic direction on food law, regulatory compliance, and related policy matters across the organization. This role involves advising internal teams and collaborating with external stakeholders, including legal experts, regulatory agencies, and industry associations.
Key Responsibilities
- Legal and Regulatory Guidance: Advise cross-functional teams-such as Food Safety, Regulatory Affairs, R&D, Labeling, and Nutrition-on compliance with food laws and regulations at federal (e.g., FSMA), state (e.g., Prop 65), and international levels.
- Incident Management: Provide legal oversight during product recalls, withdrawals, and other special situations.
- Regulatory Engagement: Interact with regulatory authorities and contribute to public comments on proposed rules and regulations.
- Product Compliance: Support development of product claims, ingredient safety assessments (e.g., GRAS), and responses to competitive challenges.
- Policy Strategy: Identify and prioritize food policy issues, help shape organizational positions, and coordinate internal responses through cross-functional collaboration.
- Industry Involvement: Participate in trade associations and industry groups to advocate for the organization's interests and stay informed on emerging issues.
- Additional Legal Support: Provide guidance on regulatory matters involving agencies such as the CPSC and Customs, and assist with marketing and labeling-related legal issues.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor and active law license with at least 7 years of legal experience in a law firm, government agency, or corporate legal department.
- Strong background in food law and regulatory compliance, particularly with FDA and USDA regulations.
- Experience developing compliance strategies in complex legal environments, ideally within the food or consumer goods industries.
- Ability to interpret scientific and technical data to support product safety and claims.
- Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills.
- Capable of working independently while keeping stakeholders informed.
