Patent Engineer / Patent Specialist
Our client, a global manufacturing company, is seeking to hire a Patent Agent for its Columbus, Ohio location. In this role, you will join a global in-house IP team, collaborating with the head of Global IP and colleagues internationally. You will manage the end-to-end patent process, from prior art searches to prosecution and portfolio management. You will work with engineers and product managers to ensure operational freedom, protect innovations, and strengthen the company. This role allows for a hybrid schedule, 3 days in-office and 2 days remote.
Responsibilities
- Confirm that upcoming product launches maintain freedom to operate within the patent landscape.
- Oversee the entire patent application lifecycle for designated business units, from initial disclosure through issuance.
- Provide integrated IP support across multiple divisions, balancing priorities based on project timelines and strategic goals.
- Perform in-depth patent landscape reviews to uncover potential risks and opportunities for innovation.
- Draft, file, and manage patent applications in multiple jurisdictions, coordinating closely with external counsel.
- Partner with inventors and product development teams to identify and assess patentable concepts.
- Compose and refine patent claims and supporting documentation to strengthen application quality.
- Maintain adherence to applicable patent regulations and legal standards throughout all processes.
- Track and manage critical deadlines for filings, responses, and office actions to ensure timely execution.
- Contribute to the creation and implementation of patent strategies aligned with broader business objectives.
- Deliver training and guidance to internal stakeholders to enhance IP awareness and compliance.
- Perform additional tasks as needed to support the intellectual property function.
Qualifications
- A master's degree in a technical discipline such as engineering, life sciences, or natural sciences.
- Active registration as a Patent Agent with the USPTO.
- At least three years of hands-on experience in patent prosecution, ideally within an in-house team or law firm environment.
- Solid knowledge of international patent frameworks, including familiarity with PCT procedures.
- Deep understanding of patent law and best practices in IP portfolio management.
- Exceptional organizational abilities combined with strong project coordination skills and attention to detail.
- Proven ability to work effectively with global teams and foster collaborative relationships.
- Willingness to travel up to 25%, primarily to U.S. R&D sites and occasionally to international locations.
