About the Job:
An International Reinsurance Company is looking for a Lead Contracts Counsel to assist their multiline reinsurance business. The Contracts Counsel will serve as the on-site subject matter expert regarding all matters related to reinsurance contracts and wordings. This role involves advising on matters related to Property & Casualty Reinsurance that is underwritten by their North American offices.
Responsibilities of the Lead Contracts Counsel:
- Draft and review contracts and other documents related to reinsurance.
- Comply with applicable laws, regulations, and corporate requirements.
- Ensure strong governance risk and control standards related to contract processes and wording.
- Support the business in contract negotiations, including discussions with both internal and external entities, including brokers.
- Review commercial agreements such as binding authority agreements, NDAs, and other ancillary documents.
- Oversee all matters related to reinsurance contracts and wordings topics.
- Provide advice to various corporate functions regarding contracts matters.
- Develop training materials and deliver trainings.
- Assist management with overall business and workflow planning.
- Oversee the contract review processes, including use of technology.
Qualifications of the Lead Contracts Counsel:
- 10+ years of relevant experience in insurance or reinsurance as a lawyer in a contract/policy or claims handling role.
- J.D. or equivalent.
- Experience drafting Terms of Business agreements, cut throughts, and other reinsurance related contracts.
- Further professional legal / insurance qualifications preferred.
- Strong understanding of Property & Casualty products and local re/insurance market required.
- Preference for Casualty wordings specialist.
- Comfortable using technology to carry out functional responsibilities.
- Proficient skills in MS Office suite.
- Proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese considered a plus.
Title: Senior Contracts & Wordings Counsel
Location: New York City or Bermuda
Hybrid: Only 3 days in-office per week
Salary: $140k - $215k + 12-15% Bonus
