A major player in the power and infrastructure industry is looking to expand their legal team with a Senior Counsel specializing in commercial trading to join our dynamic legal team. This role will primarily focus on drafting and negotiating a wide range of contracts critical to our trading operations, including ISDAs, NAESBs, AMAs, PPAs, EMAs, and other relevant agreements. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in energy trading law, particularly with a deep understanding of Dodd-Frank regulations and expertise in REC (Renewable Energy Credits), RGGIs (Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative), and other power market products.
The Senior Counsel will:
- Draft and negotiate complex trading agreements including ISDAs, NAESBs, AMAs, PPAs, EMAs, and related contracts.
- Provide legal counsel and strategic advice on commercial trading activities, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
- Conduct legal research and analysis related to energy trading laws, regulations, and market practices.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders including traders, risk management, and finance teams to support trading strategies and mitigate legal risks.
- Assist in the development and implementation of compliance programs related to Dodd-Frank, REC, RGGI, and other regulatory frameworks.
- Manage external legal counsel as necessary, ensuring effective and efficient legal support for trading activities.
- Stay abreast of legal and market developments affecting energy trading, advising senior management on potential impacts and opportunities.
The Senior Counsel must have:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and active membership in the Texas Bar (or eligible for in-house counsel licensure).
- 5-6 years of relevant experience in energy trading law, preferably within a utility or energy company environment.
- Proven track record in drafting and negotiating ISDAs, NAESBs, AMAs, PPAs, EMAs, and other commercial agreements.
- Expertise in Dodd-Frank regulations and familiarity with REC, RGGI, and other power market products.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess legal and business risks associated with trading operations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and influence decision-making processes.
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to delivering high-quality work under tight deadlines.
