Responsibilities:
- Supervise and motivate a team consisting of two compliance specialists and one paralegal to spearhead corporate compliance initiatives, mitigate risks, and ensure adherence to laws.
- Offer strategic advice and business solutions on complex regulatory requirements.
- Develop and lead strategies to address, defend, and comply with regulatory inquiries, consent decrees, litigation, violations, and claims.
- Proactively track and monitor changes in regulations and case law in areas including air resources, hazardous waste, product compliance, toxins, employee safety, packaging, hazardous materials transportation, recycling, storage tanks, export, tariffs, trade and customs, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, DOJ Sentencing Guidelines, and OSHA. Ensure compliance with company policies, practices, and systems.
- Oversee regular audits and risk assessments to identify potential risks and formulate mitigation strategies.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to develop strategies and tactics for mitigating risks and complying with new laws, while monitoring and reporting on the application of new laws.
- Manage or co-lead cross-functional compliance projects with internal stakeholders, outside counsel, and service providers.
- Lead policy management and environmental compliance efforts, guiding direct reports and collaborating cross-functionally to develop strategies and action plans that align with emerging laws, risks, industry best practices, and business objectives.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for environmental, integrity, and ethics issues with regulators and external parties. Maintain relationships with industry associations and environmental organizations.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to effectively respond to and manage environmental incidents.
- Coordinate with relevant stakeholders, including the Legal team, service providers, and regulatory authorities. Benchmark with other retailers and companies to stay informed of best practices and emerging risks.
- Develop and train team members and vendors on product safety, retail environmental practices, and more.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate, admission to and good standing with a State Bar.
- At least 5-7 years' legal experience in a business environment (law firm, in-house corporate compliance); in-house experience with a major retailer or Fortune 500 company preferred.
- Preferably experienced in litigation in one or more relevant areas (environmental, commercial, product safety, trade).
- Experience communicating, influencing and interacting with C-Suite executives.
